What is SWG? Standard Wire Gauge (SWG), also called British Standard Wire Gauge, is a traditional gauge system used across the UK and India to specify wire and sheet metal thickness. Lower SWG numbers mean thicker wire; higher numbers mean thinner wire. It is not the same as AWG (American Wire Gauge) — the two systems use different diameter values for the same gauge number, so always confirm which system your supplier is quoting.

Why this matters for wire mesh and netting: At KKB Wire Netting Industries, our GI Welded Wire Mesh, Chain Link Fencing, Hexagonal Wire Mesh and Barbed Wire are all specified by SWG. Getting the gauge right affects strength, weight and price per roll — use the calculator above to confirm the exact millimeter diameter before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most searched conversions.

1 SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) equals 7.620 mm in diameter.
16 SWG equals 1.626 mm in diameter. It is used for plaster mesh (1 inch x 1 inch welded mesh) and light welded mesh.
14 SWG equals 2.032 mm in diameter, commonly used for medium-duty welded mesh and barbed wire.
20 SWG equals 0.914 mm in diameter, typically used for lighter gauge wire mesh and hexagonal netting.
8 SWG equals 4.064 mm in diameter, a heavy gauge used for slab reinforcement mesh and heavy-duty chain link fencing.
1 mm falls between 19 SWG (1.016 mm) and 18 SWG (1.219 mm). 19 SWG is the closer match to exactly 1 mm.
0.7 mm is closest to 22 SWG (0.711 mm).
0.5 mm is closest to 25 SWG (0.508 mm).
26 SWG equals 0.4572 mm in diameter, a fine gauge used for light GI welded wire mesh.
30 SWG equals 0.3150 mm in diameter, an extra-fine gauge used for fine filtration mesh and sieves.
No. SWG (Standard Wire Gauge, also called British Standard Wire Gauge) and AWG (American Wire Gauge) are different systems with different diameter values for the same gauge number. Always confirm which system a supplier is quoting in before ordering.
KKB's GI Welded Wire Mesh is supplied from 8 SWG (heavy) to 26 SWG (fine), depending on the mesh aperture and application. Contact us on WhatsApp with your requirement for the exact gauge.
KKB's chain link fencing is supplied from 8 SWG (4.064 mm, heavy duty) to 14 SWG (2.032 mm, light duty).
Gabion mesh uses 2.7 mm to 3.4 mm wire, which is roughly 12 SWG (2.642 mm) to 10 SWG (3.251 mm).
